Throughout my campaign, I often find people are surprised when they hear about my life story. As a political campaigner, there's a common presumption that I must live in a large house with a substantial bank balance. However, that is far from my reality.
My father was raised in social housing and moved to Deal to join the Royal Marines. It was there that he met my mother, who also came from a modest upbringing. I do not come from wealth; my background is one of hard work and perseverance.
As an adult, I raised my daughters alone in social housing. There were times when I had no alternative but to claim benefits to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, I have worked incredibly hard to provide a better life for my daughters and to support them financially in ways I couldn't when they were younger. I am very fortunate to have a good employer and to work for an organisation where I have thrived professionally. This opportunity has been pivotal for me. If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't be in a position to buy my home. That's right - at the age of 45, after challenges and hardship, I am now able to buy my home. To me, there is nothing more Conservative than that.
Home ownership represents a significant milestone and a symbol of stability and achievement. It embodies the Conservative values of hard work, self-reliance, and the pursuit of personal success. My journey reflects these principles, showing that with determination and opportunity, anyone can overcome their circumstances and achieve their dreams.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others who may be facing similar struggles. It is possible to rise above adversity and build a better future. My life experience is not just a testament to my resilience, but also a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background.
