Since the start of my campaign, discussions on gender issues are raised the most on social media. Given the recent launch of the Conservative manifesto and proposed changes to the Equality Act 2010, I believe it is essential to share my perspective on this critical topic.
Canterbury has always been a city of acceptance and compassion. Our community is known for its inclusivity, exemplified by hosting the largest Pride event in Kent, which has become the social highlight of the year. The spirit of our city is one of mutual care and respect, embracing diversity and championing equity and inclusion.
For those familiar with my background, you'll know that I am the proud parent of two courageous daughters. Their resilience and strength inspire me daily. My personal experiences with domestic abuse have driven me to actively participate in focus groups supporting the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, demonstrating my commitment to the safety of women and girls. Ensuring that women and girls feel safe, respected, and heard, especially survivors of domestic abuse, is a cause close to my heart. Therefore, I believe that women's safe spaces are vital in our community. These sanctuaries provide a haven where women can feel secure and supported, and protecting these spaces is essential for the overall well-being of women and girls.
However, the broader conversation on gender issues must also encompass the safety and respect of all individuals, including those who might feel marginalised or overlooked. It is not enough to solely focus on one group; our efforts must strive towards a system that promotes equity for everyone. Members of the LGBT community also deserve respect and privacy, including the simple dignity of being able to use restrooms without fear or harassment.
In light of this, my vision for Canterbury, Whitstable and the villages - and for our society as a whole - is one where everyone feels included and valued. I advocate for an equitable solution, ensuring that all members of our community feel safe, respected, and supported.
