I’m looking forward to being part of Pride Canterbury tomorrow (Saturday, June 8), celebrating love, acceptance and empowerment in our wonderful city.
For many of us, Pride is a fantastic party, but it’s also a reminder of how far we as a society have come in terms of equality and inclusion – and how far we still have to go.
It is heart-breaking to know that there are people who are having to hide their true selves for fear of what others may think, say or do, and that there are people who feel they would be better off dead than being themselves.
Friends and colleagues have shared that they do not feel comfortable holding hands with their partner in public, or told me of the abuse they face for simply trying to live an authentic life.
Pride is for all of us; a safe place to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, and a place for those of us who are allies to show our support and to send a message that we stand for equality, for acceptance, and for kindness – today and always.
I will be having a small stall outside St Peter’s Church (opposite Nando’s) from 9am. And, following the parade, I’ll be in Dane John Gardens, enjoying the celebrations!
I hope to see you there!
